Who We Are

Shelby DEBATE Society brings together an active community of students, teachers, administrators, and community leaders devoted to improving the education and life skills of youth in Shelby County.

National Association for Urban Debate Leagues

NAUDL supports urban debate leagues around the country and hosts Urban Debate League Nationals every April. Their mission is to facilitate the participation in organized debate activities for as many urban debate students as possible. They are an important partner and support the MUDL by providing resources and best practices expertise.

Executive Director

Dwight A. Fryer: A native of Tennessee and a long time Memphis area resident, Mr. Fryer is a graduate of both The University of Memphis, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, and Christian Brothers University where he earned a master’s degree in Information Services.  He has over 25 years of work experience in accounting, program management, IT and marketing.

Shelby DEBATE Commission

The Shelby DEBATE Commission, a committed group of professionals from Memphis’s legal, corporate, and small buisness communities, supports the League’s efforts through planning and advocacy, coordinating staff, and private fundraising.
